Helen Hatton, the former Deputy Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC), was awarded the status of Freeman of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers at a ceremony held earlier this month in the City of London.
The Company is representative of the major commercial activity in the City, namely banking and financial services, and combines the traditions of the City Livery Companies with a modern outlook on the financial services sector. Its central purpose is Fellowship, Charity, Education and the Promotion of Trades and Professions.
Membership is open to all financial services professionals working within the City of London and overseas membership is available for the international financial community. With more than 600 members, drawn from over 250 companies and institutions and with almost 50 nationalities represented, the Company has a truly international character.
Progression through the Company remains much the same as it has been for centuries; the first step is to become a Freeman of the Company. Mrs Hatton’s application was sponsored by fellow Freemen, Tamara Menteschvili, Chief Executive of the Channel Islands Stock Exchange (CISX) and Diana Thompson, CISX Senior Manager, Legal and Corporate Affairs.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to be part of a City Guild,” commented Mrs Hatton. “It is without doubt a great honour.”
Mrs Hatton left the JFSC in April this year and has since founded Sator Regulatory Consulting Limited based at One Castle Street, St Helier. In her new role, Mrs Hatton works with international standard setting bodies, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF); with regulatory authorities in other jurisdictions; and with selected financial services businesses, initially in Jersey. “The business is going extremely well. So far, I am working with the FATF; an overseas Government who wishes to develop its regulatory framework; and four local Jersey companies who have various regulatory strategy and risk management needs,” said Mrs Hatton.
“I also have several clients with acquisition and dispersal needs. It is interesting and varied work and I am finding the rounded viewpoint I gain from working at global, jurisdictional and industry level is adding strength to the company’s offering.”
Mrs Hatton has over twenty years’ director level experience in offshore financial services regulation and financial crime investigation gained as Head of Enforcement for the Isle of Man Financial Supervision Commission and for the last ten years as Deputy Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission.
During this time the British Crown Dependencies have progressed from their position on the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development’s black list of ‘non cooperative’ territories, to the much applauded ranking on the OECD’s internationally recognised white list. “I am very proud to have been part of the team in Jersey that achieved that change,” commented Mrs Hatton. “Every member of the finance industry, as well as the regulator and government, should celebrate the position for the island. It has been hard won.”
